Hello there to our new friends in Detroit. I am sharing this with you in the hopes that we get better acquainted. Truth is, I have a really hard time talking about myself. REALLY hard time. Like anyone else from Michigan, the idea of bragging…by about 1975, it was made abundantly clear that was a no-no. However, I am in this racket that calls for some backstory from time to time and then and again. So, we had a little help in presenting the history of how I got to be where I am and why I work like I do. I hope that what you read, which is the good bad and ugly of it all…well, it gives you the sense that I am here for a purpose, and while it is to make a living for those who work with us….it’s 100% mission based, and truly authentic in drive and purpose.
THE VISION: RECLAIMING THE LOCAL VOICE – In an era defined by aggressive media consolidation, shifting algorithmic feeds, and the wholesale retreat of traditional local journalism across Michigan, O’Riley Media Group (OMG) stands as a vital framework of trusted regional voice. We explicitly reject hollow programmatic traffic matrices and negative clickbait patterns. Instead, our unified lifestyle portfolio — encompassing The Muskegon Channel, GR Channel, Motor City Channel, and Muskegon Channel Radio — delivers direct, verified human connection into the highest-value markets across our state.
THE PATHWAY: 35 YEARS OF NARRATIVE DEPTH – Our network’s philosophy is rooted directly in the expansive personal and broadcast history of our publisher, Andy O’Riley. This path is defined by a deep understanding of media mechanics and local connectivity:
The One-Dollar Record Spark – The entire trajectory was ignited during Andy’s childhood when he discovered a classic KISS vinyl album for a single dollar at a neighborhood garage sale. That one dollar purchased admission into an entire universe of presentation, scale, and communication. It set a life path where the very rock icons displayed on his childhood bedroom walls would ultimately become his industry mentors, teaching him how to capture and command an audience’s focus.
The Broadcast Trenches (WKLQ, 1989) – Stepping onto the airwaves just five months out of high school, Andy joined Grand Rapids’ legendary rock institution, WKLQ-FM, in 1989. Rapidly climbing to Music Director, he engineered ‘Outta Control Saturday Night,’ a dominant heavy-metal program that became cross-market cultural currency. Major national record labels flew him coast-to-coast because they recognized he held the organic pulse of the regional consumer base.
The Muskegon Transformation & WMRR (1999) – In 1999, Andy moved to Muskegon to join WMRR. At the time, it was a failing simulcast station with only a few hours of daily local programming. He arrived in the community at an absolute personal crossroads, navigating the aftermath of a failed marriage, a failed suicide attempt, and an active battle with alcoholism—proving that rock stars can teach some bad lessons, too. Yet, Muskegon became the catalyst for both personal salvation and professional reinvention. In under two years, he transformed WMRR into a 24/7 live and local powerhouse. The station became a community anchor, building deep local connections, promoting concerts, amplifying regional voices, filling food banks, and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local cancer treatment.
The Ethical Crossroads (2012) – By 2012, corporate management’s opinion of Muskegon had sunk to an irreversible low, threatening to gut the local connection Andy had spent over a decade building. Faced with a highly moral and ethical decision, Andy chose alignment with the community over corporate directives, walking away from the station to protect the integrity of his relationship with the people of Muskegon.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Velocity (2013) – In 2013, his operational focus expanded into the intense, rapid ecosystem of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, managing corporate sponsorship logistics and navigating deep consumer alignment loops under maximum pressure. He returned to Michigan with a clear realization: audiences demand absolute mechanical authenticity, not corporate packaging.
CIVIC LEADERSHIP & LOCAL ROOTS – Our properties carry immense market weight because our leadership is actively integrated into the governing and wellness structures of the communities we anchor. Andy serves continuously in vital civic positions:
- Board President, The Salvation Army (Muskegon): Guiding crucial regional strategy blocks, emergency shelter operations, and seasonal resource execution.
- Board Trustee, Harbor Hospice Foundation: Actively serving a premier clinical healthcare system that achieved the elite national Honors Elite classification — the single exclusive hospice group in the state of Michigan to reach that benchmark.
- Elected Trustee, Holton Public Schools Board: Formulating critical strategic policy, protecting educational funding allocations, and expanding modern STEAM programming for rural students.
THE ANCIENT LITERACY OF MODERN CONNECTION – Andy’s outside interests track directly back into structural preservation, youth literacy, and human communication loops. As an active student of archaeology and history, he has spent over 30 years working in classrooms, teaching children how proper, responsible media should be constructed as an alternative to the clickbait and rage bait dominant in modern media markets. By introducing children’s literacy through history, he bridges ancient communication metrics with modern everyday life.
“I love showing kids that 9,000-year-old communication patterns are nearly identical to how we talk today. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics are fundamentally the world’s original emojis — proof that human beings have always utilized visual symbols to record their stories, tell jokes, and map out their worlds. Kids are honest, and when 23 out of 25 years they tell you all they hear about their community on the news is that someone was murdered, you better listen.”
This fascination with preservation extends to his recovery of classic vintage Farmall tractors and a staggering personal archive of museum-grade rock-and-roll memorabilia — each item serving as a physical ledger of communication history.
There it is. My life story. I look forward to helping tell yours, your community and your projects as we roll along. Thanks for taking the time to have a read.
