One thing we know for sure is that underestimating anyone is generally a mistake.  We also believe that there are some things about people, and some conditions, that still feel a little foreign.  Take for instance a Spectrum Disorder.  “A spectrum disorder, most commonly known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurological and developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, learns, and behaves.”  It’s understandable that a first encounter with someone “different” might be a learning experience and awkward.  Once you settle in and get to know that person…a world of nothing but awesome opens up.  Puzzle Joe.  We happened to stumble upon his YouTube page.  We found a dreamer.  One who’s really not all that far away from that dream becoming a reality.  That’s why Joe is our first state wide feature story.  Joe is a game changer, and his strength…..is in his advocacy for himself as well as others “on the spectrum”.

Joe is 33.  Childhood was hard.  Really hard.  Joe also wasn’t diagnosed as an ASD individual till well after his schooling days.  He’s remarkably articulate in his speaking and thinking as well as his ability to be “on the mic”, more on that in a moment.  When Joe learned about his Asperger’s as it was once known, he decided that it was important to find his way to talk about his condition to help reduce the stigma around it.  Asperger’s isn’t the current term anymore, it’s just part of the spectrum now, but it’s noted by things like, trouble with social cues and body language.  Difficulty starting or keeping a conversation, intense focus on narrow topics, strong preference for strict routines and high sensitivity to light, sound, or touch.  Did you notice in there how there’s no mention of mental deficiency, handicap or limit?  Some of the most brilliant minds ever have been diagnosed with Asperger’s.  Temple Grandin is one of them.  Temple Grandin is a world-renowned animal scientist, Colorado State University professor, and prominent autism advocate who revolutionized humane livestock handling systems using her unique visual thinking.  A little more “behind the scenes” – John Elder Robinson.  In the 1970s, John worked as an electronic engineer and designer for the band KISS, famously creating their signature special-effects gear, including Ace Frehley’s fire-breathing, smoking, and light-up guitars.  John is said to be able to “see electricity”.  He’s fascinating to hear speak.

Joe’s got the goods.  What does Joe love?  He LOVES being a PA Announcer.  In fact, you’ll see in our story that he’s no stranger to it.  He’s even been on the mic with the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on game nights announcing the starting line up.  If you hear a voice in the Southgate Meijer telling you what’s on special….it might be Joe.  If you check out his YouTube Channel, you’ll find his thoughts..hopes, dreams and memories and most of all, you will hear honest talk about living with a spectrum disorder from an honest and good person who really wants nothing more than to be a regular dude.  Which he is, and while it might take a meet up or two for some, I have been blessed in my life to have spent years around guys like Joe, and I spotted who’s in there past the couple of “awkwards” that might be on the surface.  I knew the second I saw the guy that there was something happening here that was really special.  Joe and his dad inviting me in was a chance taken on their end, and we’re very fortunate.  Remember all those “characteristics” in the first paragraph?  I am a stranger with a camera from the other side of Michigan.  Joe showed his devotion to the mission by overcoming all of that, just to invite me in.

What’s the next step?  Well, Joe is in the batters box and ready to swing.  We’re going to help.  To begin, we have a radio arm of what we publish.  Joe will soon have a weekly show on it.  We’ve not gotten in to any details about time or day or anything, but when we do and Joe is ready, we’re going to proudly welcome him.  You will find the links to meet Joe yourself below.  He’s a great guest for radio, television or podcasts but be ready.  Honesty is paramount and no words are minced.  He’s informed about ASD and can speak openly about his journey and where he hopes to go.  Finally…..do you run a sports facility?  Have you ever thought about a special night for the team?  An “All Abilities” night maybe?  Where folks who might not otherwise get a chance to do something like be the announcer or be an usher or maybe honorary first pitch?  It’s a powerful statement.  Not only can Joe come and be a part of it, he’s got the people around him to make it a breeze….we will work to help promote the event and find more who want to be a part of the event.  Since an event like this is an experience in the “real world” we’d like it to be an evening that no one forgets.  Let’s make it happen for Joe and everyone of any ability.

I kinda figured I’d be picking up a buddy when we ventured over to Southgate to meet up.  I also made sure in advance to let the family know this wasn’t a one and done meeting.  Joe is worth the time and investment because Joe uses his ability to show us all that there’s nothing or no one that can stand in the way.  Truly…..the best example for all of us, and absolutely Remarkable in Michigan.
